You All Rock!
Thank you all for coming out to Back To School Night. We had a great turn out. I know a couple weren't able to make it, no worries. I'll email the important info. If you have questions about anything, please email me. There is a lot of new info at the start of the year.
Thanks for all of the parent help sign-ups. I look forward to having you all in class this week.
A couple of notes. Students need to choose 3 activities in a row for spelling homework. If you choose spellingcity.com, be sure to log in to access the list so you don't have to type the words in yourself. username is student's email (for example: firstname.lastname@example.org) password is last name 20015 (for example: Hendrix2015). Find the correct list and enjoy the games. Take as many practice tests as you would like. Have fun.
This Week's Goals
Math - Addition and subtraction strategies. Time to start find some ways to add and subtract faster and also begin memorizing some math facts.
Language Arts - Fluency practice. Students will start Lexia and ReadLive in class this week. In writing we will be reviewing the Step Up to Writing Paragraphs learned in 1st grade and start adding some variety with different topic sentences.
Science - Continue to learn about plant adaptations. How can plants sense light? How do plants make energy out of sunlight? Understand that the sun gives the earth energy in the form of light and heat and that plants can transform that light into food.
Our first field trip is scheduled for October 7th. We are going to the Gateway Science Museum with Third grade. Put it on your calendar. Or click my 2nd grade calendar if you use Google and add it to yours. We will probably go a park or something too.
School For Real
We had a great first week in second grade. We are getting back in the swing and ready to get to work! This week we will take a series of assessments to find out exactly where each student is performing right now. We will use this information to tailor an educational program for each student. Ask me next week to find out how your student is performing right now.
In our first science unit we will study plants, their adaptions and what they need to survive. We are designing an experiment. We have pea sprouts already. Please send in a shoe box with your child tomorrow if you have one. I have a few extras. If you have a couple, send an extra in case someone doesn't have one.
Back To School Night
Please plan to come out Thursday night. Check out the school newsletter for times. Lots of info you need will be presented in class and in the parent meeting.
A book order went home today. Check it out. This is a great way to get cheap books for your kids. Also, we get points that we use to buy books for the classroom. Many parents choose to order on line. Our class code is MHNCP.
I sent it home today. The packet is due Friday. No spelling this week. Please get your child reading each night. Reading logs will also start next week. I'll give all the details at Back to School Night.
