Book Orders- Look for a pink sheet in the Monday/Homework folder with our class code and order deadlines. Feel free to use the online option or turn the order form into me. I will try to send the information each time we have new book orders! Thank YOU! So many great things happened this week...because of you! First, I appreciate the quick emails, text messages and other forms of communication you used to contact me this week. If there is anything, big or small, that I can help you with, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Second, thank you to the parents who were able to come in this week and help. It was so nice to have another adult in the classroom at different times. And third, thank you for helping your 2nd grader with homework! WOW! They earned 253 Stars! Thank you for motivating and investing in your kids...it's showing! This Week In 2nd GradeMath- We will continue Chapter 1 in our math books. This week we will work on the following: addition using a number line and using addition to solve subraction. Continue to work on math facts at home, whether it be with a card game, flashcards or an app found on your phone. Being fluent in simple addition math facts will help your student in the upcoming weeks. Science- This week we will start our Properties of Matter Unit. In this unit we will discuss how we can determine what materials will be best used to solve a problem based on their physical properties. Reading- Our class has been adapting well to the Read Live program. It is exciting to see them working on their fluency and comprehension. Social Studies- This week we will be starting our Grandparent Unit! We will start by talking about what things were like for our grandparents and will use timelines to understand how "old" our grandparents really are and to identify how their lives have changed in the past 7 years. In a few weeks, I will be asking each student to interview a grandparent in which they will write a report about. We will be hosting a "Grandparent Day" on October 6 in our class. Stay tuned for more information! STAR HomeworkThe homework menu will be the same as last week. The kids have been successful in reaching their goal once again! Thank you for encouarging your kids to read and practice math! Remember to return the STAR tracking sheet in folders each Friday. Thanks! Reading- Highly recommended! 1 star for every 10 minutes of reading. Students should try to read for about 20 minutes each night. Math- Practice simple addition math facts. The goal is for your student to become fluent in simple math facts so find any game or activity that will allow them to practice. Upcoming Dates and Events9/4 - No School (Labor Day)

Shout Outs!Thank you for coming to Back to School Night on Thursday. And for some of you who couldn't make it, thank you for connecting with me. I am thankful to have parent help in the class this year. If you signed up to help, I would love to have you start this week, if it works for you. And, did you know that we have a parent who is a biologist, engineer and and even an archaeologist?!?! Thank you for offering your help. I am so excited to partner with ALL of you this year through your kids and in the classroom. This Week In 2nd GradeMath- Our math curriculum is starting us out with basic review. We have reviewed the following concepts: communative property (4+5=5+4), double facts (5+5) and near doubles (5+6). This week we will review more addition strategies using ten frames, hundreds charts, number lines and using addition to help us solve a subtraction problem. Science- We will have another science challenge on Friday. It has been fun to start the year off with these challenges that get the students thinking outside of the box and understanding that there is more then one way to solve a problem. We have have a class of brilliant minds! Reading- We are up and running with Read Live. It will take some time for the students to get used to the program. I'm so excited to get them working on their fluency goals! STAR HomeworkThe kids earned 163 STARS this week! Woo-hoo! Their goal was 100, so they are feeling pretty good about their hard work! We will up the goal this week since the STAR Homework menu will include math. If you are ever unsure of what to do, please don't hesitate to ask! I'd love to help! And remember, the STAR tracking form will be in the student's Monday folder and can be filled out and returned (in the Monday folder) on Friday. Reading- Try to make this a part of your homework routine...even if it's the only thing you do! Math- In second grade, students shift from "pounding it out" to recalling a math fact from memory. Find an idea online, use a game you have a home or make one up! Playing cards, dice, and flashcards are all good tools to have on hand! Find what your child enjoys and go with it!
