Rocks!This week we will be learning about the different types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. We will be learning about the different properties of rocks and how they were formed. Each day we will learn about a different rock and then on Thursday we will model each rock with food! This "Rock Buffet" will be our way of celebrating our Spring Break.
This Week in 2nd GradeMath- The kids have been doing so well with our money unit! This math chapter also continues to build on the student's skills of telling time. We will be working with analog and digital clocks and telling time by half, quarter and five minutes. Please continue to practice money and time with your student...this will enrich their learning in big ways! We will take a chapter test at the end of the week. Science- The landform study this week was super fun! We will be adding rocks to our earth science unit this week. We will be hoping to have a "Rock Buffet" on Thursday for a hands on experience. Reading/Writing- Our Goal Groups have been a good addition to our reading groups. I'm so proud of the students for owning their goals and being intentional with their work. We are really working on spelling skills, writing complete and detailed sentences and tidiness. With reading, our push is for students to find the "evidence" in the text in order to answer, predict and infer. I'm telling you...these kids are awesome and they are getting ready for 3rd grade! Social Studies- The landform science unit will compliment the geography unit we just studied in Social Studies. We will be referencing quite a few maps in the next few weeks. Spelling- No spelling this week. We will pick up after Spring Break. STAR HomeworkWe will have a special writing assignment this week for homework. The kids will be asked to "plan" their story with a graphic organizer and then write. We will be sharing their stories on Thursday! The HW menu will still include reading as an option...a very good option! Reminder that HW is due on Thursday! Upcoming Dates & Events3/30-Potential Snow Day {No School}

This Week in 2nd GradeMath- We took some time to become familiar with the different coins and their values. If you have "real" money laying around, have your child play with it, count it, identify it...this will be helpful for them as we start adding and subtracting different amounts of money. Science- We will be starting our new unit on Landforms this week. The students will create a landform out of clay for our Science Friday activity! Reading/Writing- Goals were identified during PLPs and I would like to shake things up a bit in our reading and writing groups in order to help kids meet there goals. "Goal Groups" will give kids a chance to work on their goals of fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and challenging text. Social Studies- The landform science unit will compliment the geography unit we just studied in Social Studies. We will be referencing quite a few maps in the next few weeks. Spelling- The students will have a new spelling list in their folders today. They did great last week even though it was a short week! Test will be Friday morning. STAR HomeworkThey were so close to meeting their goal last week, even though it was a short week. Keep encouraging your child to read, practice coin counting, ST Math or other homework activities. Students who do not put their name on their HW sheet will not earn a ticket. Upcoming Events & Dates3/30-Potential Snow Day {No School}
