Homework ChallengeYour student has been challenged to read a "Tower" of books! The purpose of this challenge is to expose the students to variety of book genres. I have been collecting books from each category and they are available to the students each day in class. Of course, they can read their own books if they apply. Here is what you find in their Homework/Monday Folder: The Directions & Book Categories - Use as a checklist to make sure all categories are being read. (Stays at home until challenge is complete) Book Chart- Fill out each book read in order starting at the bottom. (Stays at home until challenge is complete) Summary- Every Friday students will be required to turn in one book summary with their Homework folder. The summary will be taped to the inside of the folder each week. (One summary is turned in each Friday for the HW Dojo point) Notes: - Self-paced: Each student will work at their pace. -Reward: Each student will be rewarded when they complete the challenge. -Homework: Please encourage your student to read every night! -Summary: Only one summary is turned in each week (even if more than one book was read or even partially read). -Ninja Goal: Our school as been challenged by three American Ninja Warriors to complete/turn their homework each week. We are keeping track (as a school) of the students who display responsibility and diligence to accomplish this goal. They will be invited to participate in a special obstacle course in May. The summary reports are my way to track student's homework each week. This Month in 2nd GradeMath- We will begin double digit subtraction with the tens and ones columns. Chapter 5 will guide the students step by step to identify place value and prepare them for regrouping with subtraction. Since they already have the basic concept of regrouping with addition, this should be pretty easy for them to grasp! Science- We will continue to explore plants and understand the requirements needed for growth. Does a plant need dirt to survive? Should you water a catus? Where do plants grow best? After our plant unit we will focus on engineering and creativity. Reading- Our book clubs are off to a great start. We work a lot on expression, voice and reading smoothly. Some students will begin to work on Read Live to rebuild their reading fluency. I-ready and Lexia are also going to be pushed to challenge students at their level. Writing- I want to help foster a love for writing by giving many opportunities for free choice writing. We will balance informational, narrative and creative writing. Our next Social Studies unit will use a combination of informational and narrative. Social Studies- In a few weeks the students will be assigned a famous American to research. They will use a variety of sources to gather information for a report. The report will be written in sections and will guide students through a character study. This is always a wonderful unit where students can identify with "normal" people who do extraordinary things. Our unit will end with a video project. Kids love it!
