Thank you for turning in your permission slips this week!  I have included another persmission slip in your student's Monday/HW folder if you need to turn one in still.  The cost is $5 per person (including parents)  We will need  one more parent driver!  We are limited to 6 parents and so far I have 5 and need 4 more seats.  Please indicate if you can drive on the permission slip or email me.  Let me know if you have any questions!

This Week in 2nd Grade

Math-  A big part of our math work is allowing the students to connect math to real world problems.  I encourage you to take time and work through some of the word problems in the math packet.  Have your student draw a diagram or picture or EXPLAIN what the question is asking and how they are going to solve.   Our goal is to take the chapter test at the end of the week.

Science-  On Friday the students were challenged to make a boat out of foil that would float and hold the most "gems."  We have some amazing engineers in this class!  My favorite part was we got to learn from our mistakes and recreate a boat after analyzing the "successful" boats. "Science Friday" will feature another STEM challenge!

Reading/Writing-  It's that time of the year where we give a few assessments.  The students know that this is our way of tracking their growth (that we'll get to celebrate) and giving us feedback as to areas we should work on.  I'm very proud of how diligent they are to take the assessments.  I will be pacing the assessments throughout the next week or so during reading groups.

Our famous person research has been going well!  They are learning really interesting facts about their person.  This week we will start to construct our writing portion of the project.

Social Studies-  You probably have heard about your student's famous person.  They were so excited to get right to work!  We will be doing all of the research and writing in class.  However, feel free to engage with your student at home by watching a video or reading a book together about their person.  I have heard several kids already have done this!  This will be our unit that we showcase at Open House.  Your interest and engagement in this project will enhance their learning.  You won't want to miss our Open House, February 22!

Spelling-  Some of the spelling lists focus on the same sound found in words, but spelled differently (ex:  chief/green/team).  These are tricky and might require some extra attention.  Remember, it's OK that they don't pass.  I want to make sure they "get it" before moving on.   A new list will be in their Homework Folders on Monday.  They can grab a spelling tic-tac-toe sheet from me, work on spellingcity.com or study on their own.  I am sure to give time in class to spelling each week.

STAR Homework

** We have not been meeting our weekly goal lately.  Please help your child practice responsibility by doing their homework, tracking their STARS and bringing the HW slip and folder back on Friday.
Reading- 1 STAR for every 10 minutes
Writing- Journal, write a story or a letter...just a few ideas.   Really encourage your student to work on editing (look for punctuation, spelling and other corrections).
Spelling- practice spelling words (Tic, Tac, Toe; Spelling City; other practice)
Math- game of choice, math packet (included in HW folder) or other math practice.
