Becoming GREAT!

It has been really fascinating for the students to learn about ordinary people who have done GREAT things.  The biography report has been a great launch pad to discuss a variety of vitures and what perfect timing to further discuss these virtures...the WINTER OLYMPICS!  We will be learning about different events, athletes and even the science involved in the winter games.  I hope you get opportunities to watch and discuss the Olympics with your student.  I'm very excited to help kids realize that they too are GREAT and can do GREAT things!  {...and I think their parents are pretty GREAT, too!}

This Week in 2nd Grade

Math-  The chapter test will be on Tuesday or Thursday this week.   I have a feeling they are going to do GREAT!

Science-  There will be no science this Friday due to a special performace from Theater in the Now.  I am so excited to introduce Winter Olympic STEM challenges during this month!  

Reading/Writing-  We will be reading and learning about the Winter Olympic events during our reading groups this month.  We will focus on a variety of comprehension strategies and reading fluency.

The writing part of our biography reports are moving along!  I'm so proud of them!  They have been making some big connections between their famous person and themselves...what does it take to become GREAT?!

Social Studies-  We will bridge our biography research and the Winter Olympics.  Our theme is:  BECOMING GREAT.  How do ordinary people become GREAT?  How do athletes become GREAT?  How are 2nd graders becoming GREAT?  Take the opportunity to discuss the greatness you see in the Winter Olympics...perserverence, commitment, focus, overcoming challenges, etc...how do you see these qualities in your kids?!?!

Spelling-  It's so fun to see a student who has studied hard, pass their spelling test on Friday!  They are so proud of themselves!  Practicing spelling words develops responsibility and the payoff is so rewarding!  Keep up the GREAT work!

STAR Homework

** We have not been meeting our weekly goal lately.  Please help your child practice responsibility by doing their homework, tracking their STARS and bringing the HW slip and folder back on Friday.  
Reading- 1 STAR for every 10 minutes
Writing- Journal, write a story or a letter...just a few ideas.   Really encourage your student to work on editing (look for punctuation, spelling and other corrections).
Spelling- practice spelling words (Tic, Tac, Toe; Spelling City; other practice)
Math- game of choice or other math practice (no math practice pages this week).
