It's time...

This is one of my favorite projects we do in 2nd grade!  Please send in your student's "costume" or props early this week.  Please understand that the "costume" should be something you have or can borrow.  Let me know if you are looking for anything...I might be able to help!  We will be filming throughout the week and hopefully wrapping it up on Tuesday.  

Field Trip onWednesday!  

Drivers:  Be at the school by 9:20; we will return by 12:30
Lunch:  We will be back in time to eat at the school
Dress:  Free dress {Valentine's Day Free Dress}
Reminders:  If you haven't paid, please send $5 

Valentine's Day Celebration
will be held after lunch. 
We will make a "mailbox" for valentines and take time to read through our mail, dance and sing!
  

Becoming GREAT

We will be talking a lot about the Winter Olympics and how people can do GREAT things when they put their mind to it...these 2nd graders are no exception!  I hope you get a chance to sit together and watch the Olympic games this week.   Talk about what it took for athletes to get to the Olympics.  Talk about what choices an athlete has after a fall or loss.  Tell about a time you had to use excellence, determination or perserverance to achieve a goal.  Encourage your child in the ways you see them working hard to achieve a goal.   

This Week in 2nd Grade

Math-  We will be starting a new chapter this week that will expose the students to addition and subtraction word problems.  These are so good for the students to apply their skills to "real-life" problems!  

Science-  Winter Olympic STEM challenges during this month!  

Reading/Writing-  We will be reading and learning about the Winter Olympic events during our reading groups this month.  We will focus on a variety of comprehension strategies and reading fluency.

We will be wrapping up our written reports early this week!

Social Studies-  We will bridge our biography research and the Winter Olympics.  Our theme is:  BECOMING GREAT.  How do ordinary people become GREAT?  How do athletes become GREAT?  How are 2nd graders becoming GREAT?  Take the opportunity to discuss the greatness you see in the Winter Olympics...perserverence, commitment, focus, overcoming challenges, etc...how do you see these qualities in your kids?!?!

Spelling-  I will be giving the students new spelling words this week, however, we will not be testing this week since it is a short week and we have a lot to accomplish.  The test will be the following Friday.  Since both weeks are short, be sure to be studying at home!

STAR Homework

It's a short week!  The HW menu looks the same as usual.  Spelling tests will be given the following Friday due to 2 short weeks.  If a student has missed school or has fallen behind for various reasons, their written report will be sent home to finish.  I will be sure to include clear instructions for the kids.  Most kids are all caught up!
Challenge your student to read independently for an extended amount of time this week!  This is the time in 2nd grade where fluency is built.
