Famous American Biography ProjectSecond greade standards require students to understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others’ lives. This week, the students will choose (in class) a famous person to research. The kids will learn how to take notes from different resources and organize their notes according to topics. Our final project, a "Who Am I?" interactive video, will be displayed at Open House on February 22. More details to come! This Week in 2nd GradeMath- The students have done a great job with double digit subtraction with regrouping! I am so proud of them! We will continue to practice this concept using base ten blocks. Here are two helpful videos, in case you were wondering... youtu.be/iHPApVGn4K4 & youtu.be/8a78H6Za5Go. Science- We finished up our plant unit last week! The next few weeks of science will be investigations and STEM challenges. This Friday we will ask the question: Are mittens warm? Reading/Writing- This week we will be reading the book, The Mitten, by Jan Brett. The students will use sequencing and cause and effect reading strategies for this unit. Social Studies- The kids will start our biography unit off by interviewing each other and presenting facts to the class. We will also talk about what makes someone "famous?" Spelling- The students were given their spelling words on Thursday during the word work center. I know this is a short week, so I will be sure they get the same amount of time as they do in a regular week to practice their words. Spending some time on the words at home will also help! STAR HomeworkI really enjoyed reading the student's "how to brush your teeth" papers! They did a great job! For a writing option this week, give your child a topic to write about in sequence, similar to last week's assignment. Remember, editing is just as important as writing! Spelling activities can include Spellingcity.com or the students can grab a Spelling Tic Tac Toe from the class (not included in folder). I will have sent home some math practice pages from their workbooks. Students who practiced the math concepts with their parents came in much more confident the next day! These math pages do not need to be turned in, just mark a STAR for each activity/page completed. And of course...there is always READING! I will have some biography books available for some of the famous people we are researching. This will be a fun way for you to engage in their famous person research! Feel free to look up and read more about their famous person together to create excitement and increase interest (I highly suggest you are present when they use online resources). 10 minutes = 1 STAR Upcoming Dates & Events2/3-Rummage Sale

I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season! It was so fun to run into some of the kids around town. I can't wait to hear how everyone celebrated. I missed everyone and am feeling renewed and excited for what 2018 has in store for our class! I was so blessed by everyone's sweet Christmas gifts. I felt so loved. This is such a loving and thoughtful class...and I know they get it from their parents! The gifts were so thoughtfully chosen and the words written were very meaningful. Thank you for the class gift {yay for Target!} and the individual gifts. I know Mrs. Matz was overwhelmed as well! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts! This Week in 2nd GradeMath- This week we will ease into double digit subtraction and build up to regrouping. Science- We will be finishing up our plant unit this week. Reading/Writing- We will focus on Read Live in order to get us back into the groove of things. We will also be answering the "wh" questions (who, what, when, where, why) as we learn about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. This will be a warm up to the upcoming biography unit! Social Studies- We will be learning about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the important role he played in American History. This will be a springboard to the upcoming Famous American Biography report/project that will be showcased at Open House in February. Spelling- There will be no spelling sent home in this week's homework folders. I will give the students their new spelling lists on Thursday in class during the word work center. Since next week is a short week, this will give the students enough time to study and become familiar with the words. The spelling list will go home next Tuesday and the test will be Friday. If the students remember their list number (or email me), they can always access activities on Spellingcity.com. STAR HomeworkThis week I will send home a writing activity for the students to work on throughout the week. I have included a checklist for the students to edit their writing. Keep this at home for future reference. Also, math activities can include card (or other) games, ST Math, Prodigy (if approved by you!) and/or other math apps. As always... 10 minutes of reading will earn 1 star! No School, Monday, January 15thUpcoming Dates & Events1/15-MLK Jr. Day {No School}
