STAR HomeworkHomework will be a little different this week for a few reasons. First, it's a short week. I don't usually like assigning spelling words during a short week, but we took so many breaks before Christmas and I want to keep the momentum going from last week. To balance out the spelling homework, I did not assign any writing or math. Reading is still an option...always a good option! The other difference is a special assignment to choose a famous person to study in our upcoming biography unit. I sent home a letter in the Monday Folders that will guide you in helping your child choose a famous person. I also included a long list of names for you to consider, but are not limited to. I encourage you to have a fun time with this assignment as a family. Take the time to talk about some of the famous people your child knows and impress them with your knowlege of famous people. Choose someone that you are both excited about. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. In class this week...Math: We will taking the chapter math test on Wednesday. Thursday we will start introducing double digit subtraction with regrouping. Writing: The students wrote some very thoughtful "dreams" of their own last week during our study of MLK, Jr. They also wrote about MLK, Jr's dream. We will focus on taking notes this week. Social Studies: Students will plot their lives on a timeline. Together we will put important historical events on a timeline that we can reference during our biography unit. Science: We will have a time to "play with science" this Friday. Mark your CalendarsThursday, February 9, 2017 (9:15-2:00) We will be joining 3rd grade to watch a fun dinosaur show at Chico State. After, weather permitting, we will head to Wildwood park for lunch. We need drivers! There is a permission slip in the Monday Folders today. Please fill it out and return ASAP.
Tuesday, February 21, 2017 History Night at Achieve- Our class video and individual biography scrapbooks will be displayed.

Welcome Back!Well, it's official! I will be teaching second grade full time! I am so honored and excited to be the full time teacher of this second grade class! I missed them during Christmas break and am excited to spend the rest of the year with them! I am also excited for Mr. Wright's new role and confident that he will continue to be a big part of our class! Thank you!!!Thank you for making second grade such a merry place to be! First of all, thank you for the wonderful, generous and thoughtful gift that the class gave me! Wow! I sure felt loved! Also, thank you to the parents who were able to drive to Atria on Wednesday. Our students blessed the residents with their sweet songs and engaged in sweet conversations. We hope to do that again. It was really special. Last, thank you to the parents who pulled off a wonderful donut and hot cocoa party first thing on Wednesday morning. You are a group of parents who are generous with your time and talents. You make second grade extra special. Thank you! HomeworkWe'll be diving right into our STAR Homework this week. Spelling: The students will have a new list of spelling words from mid-December. Spelling Tic Tac Toe is available as well as Spelling City online for spelling activity options. Note: please contact me sooner than later if you think your student received the wrong list. Mistakes happen, and it's easier to fix them on Tuesday than Friday. Writing: I have included a worksheet for students to fill out about their Christmas break. Use this as an opportunity to enforce complete sentences, tidy printing, correct capitalization and punctuation. You may also choose another writing activity that the same writing skills can be practiced. Reading: As always, reading 20 minutes each night is encouraged. An extra 10 minutes is worth an extra star...what a deal! Math: Practice simple math facts from memory or flashcards. If you have time, play a math game together as a family with cards or dice. ST Math is another great option. MathWe will start our next chapter in math. We will be buildiup to double digit subtraction with regrouping. This is a target math goal in second grade and will be working on this concept for awhile. Language Arts & Social StudiesWe are gearing up to our famous person biography for History Night project. This week we will be studying Martin Luther King, Jr. together and writing about his life. Next week we will be putting different famous people and events on a time line. For homework next week, you and your student will choose a famous person for them to study...stay tuned!
